As a celebrant working across York and Yorkshire, I’d love to say that creating a wedding ceremony is as simple as waving a magic wand-boof!-and there it is: the perfect, bespoke ceremony of your dreams.
But in reality? It takes a little more time, thought, and collaboration—on both sides!
In this blog, I’ll walk you through the step-by-step process of how we’ll work together to create a wedding ceremony that’s personal, meaningful, and utterly you. By the end, you’ll have a clear idea of what’s involved and whether a celebrant-led ceremony is the right fit for you.
Why choose a wedding led by Denise?
Of course, I’m going to say a celebrant-led ceremony is the best option (because for so many couples-it is!). But it’s also true that crafting something bespoke together takes a little input from you too. Don’t worry-I’ll do the heavy lifting, but there are a few bits only you can provide to help me bring your ceremony to life.
So, let’s dive into how we co-create a true Yorkshire wedding ceremony that’s romantic, personal, maybe even a little unexpected – and, most importantly, heartfelt.

💬 Step 1: Let’s Chat!
First things first – we need to see if we’re a good fit. We’ll have a relaxed, no-pressure chat on WhatsApp (ideally with both of you) so I can learn a little about your story, and you can get a feel for how I work.
Afterwards, I’ll follow up to ask whether you’d like to go ahead and book me. If you say yes (hooray!) then it’s on to Step 2.

📝 Step 2: Paperwork & Deposit
Once you’ve confirmed that you’d like to work with me, I’ll send over your contract, terms & conditions, and an invoice for the deposit (which is 50% of your total fee). Signing the contract and paying the deposit secures your date in my diary- and we’re officially a team!
💌 Step 3: The Questionnaires
Now the fun starts! I’ll send you three short questionnaires:
- One to complete together
- One for each of you individually, all about your love story
We’ll also pencil in a date for our face-to-face planning meeting, which usually takes place about three months before your wedding day.
✍️ Step 4: Ceremony Draft Begins
Once I receive your completed questionnaires, I start piecing your ceremony together. There may be a few messages back and forth as I clarify some details and prepare for our in-person meeting.
🤝 Step 5: The Face-to-Face Meeting
We’ll meet at a venue of your choice- your home, my office (in York), or your wedding venue (which is especially handy if I haven’t seen it before). We’ll walk through your ceremony, go over your love story, and make sure I’ve captured all the key details correctly. It’s also a great chance for us to connect more deeply and get excited about the big day!
🔥 Step 6: Vows, Rituals & Readings
During our meeting, we’ll explore optional ceremony elements such as:
- Symbolic rituals (like handfasting, candle lighting, or ring warming)
- Your vows (write your own or choose from my carefully crafted options)
- Readings, performances, or special people you’d like to involve
- Music choices for the ceremony
- Key people in your wedding party (bridesmaids, best man, family, etc.)
Don’t worry—I’ve got loads of inspiration to share.
🖋️ Step 7: Finalising Your Ceremony
With everything in hand, I’ll begin crafting your full ceremony script. About a month before your wedding, I’ll send you a draft to review. You’ll have the chance to request changes, and once you’re happy, you’ll sign it off.
At this stage, I’ll also ask for your final payment. If any last-minute tweaks are needed, I’ll check
💍 Step 8: Your Big Day
The moment has arrived! You’ll walk into a ceremony that feels completely and authentically you. It will reflect your personalities, your journey, and the future you’re stepping into together-and I’ll be right there with you, guiding the way.
